You Have Questions?

Here are answers to common questions I field from prospective clients. Of course, feel free to connect with me anytime to answer your queries.

What can I expect from working with you?

From one professional to another, I will extend you every courtesy and the respect you and your project deserve. I firmly believe in the Golden Rule – "Do unto others as I'd have them do unto me."

Expect quality results – that's my promise to you. Naturally, any copywriting project is a two-way street. I will depend on your cooperation to fulfill my promise to you.

Do you do the work yourself or outsource?

When you hire my writing services, I do the writing. This way, I retain control over the outcome. Plus, I figure that if my client hires me for my tech writing services, they rightfully expect me to do the writing. I may need to outsource some research. If you need graphic design work, I work closely with quality design specialists to deliver the finished product you deserve.

Do you charge more for rush jobs?

I take my clients' deadlines seriously. If you approach me with a rush job and my schedule is full, I will not jeopardize existing commitments to "shoehorn" in another project.

Now, I realize other writers may use a rush job as justification to increase their rates even at the risk of compromising results, but this is not how I operate. Either I take your urgent project on because I have the time to do it justice, or my schedule will not allow it; in that case, we will either reach a compromise or I will respectfully decline.

What if I want to make revisions?

I allow up to two formal reviews as part of my standard tech writing package, provided the scope remains unchanged. Revisions and modifications required due to scope changes or extended delays on your end may incur additional charges.

What do your fees include?

I submit a written quote outlining the services I offer for your tech writing project. In general, my quoted price includes the research and writing required and any contact I need to make with your customers or other parties (within reason) to reach the objectives set out in our agreement.

How do I go about hiring you? Do I have to sign a contract? Do you ask for money upfront?

If you're satisfied with my firm price quote and wish to proceed, you click on the Accept button accompanying my online quote, and I'll issue you an invoice for the deposit – typically 50% due upon receipt of the invoice (I waive the need for a deposit for established clients). Payment is a simple online process by credit card or e-transfer.

Unless otherwise agreed to, final invoices are due either upon receipt of my invoice or 7 days after my first submission. You can count on me to make every effort to respond promptly to your requests. In return, as professionals, I expect you to pay promptly.

Will you coordinate with my other suppliers?

Yes, I will coordinate with other parties as directed by you to complete the project. Of course, I have no control over their actions, so I cannot guarantee timely completion if they respond slowly. I'll keep you apprised of any concerns that could affect project scheduling.

I work in a highly technical field. How will you understand my work well enough to write about it?

In technical matters, you'll see the value of my engineering background and years of experience in technology. I do not claim to know all about your technologies and services. However, I will understand enough to ask the right questions and get the appropriate responses. I'll translate what I learned into content that resonates with your target audiences and delivers the results you seek.

What sets you apart from other copywriters?

Technology is an engineering-intensive field that I am deeply interested in and have firsthand experience with. I graduated with a degree in electrical engineering and have worked at an electric utility, a global manufacturer of electrical infrastructure, and in the construction industry as a project manager, estimator, and manufacturer of structural construction elements for residential and commercial projects. I also spent years selling advanced water and wastewater treatment technologies to utilities and industrial clients. I enjoy working with technology and communicating complex concepts to address the needs of technical and non-technical audiences alike.

Most importantly, by engaging my tech writing services, you're working with a veteran copywriting professional who will make your life easier. I'll get the job done with minimal oversight, on time and on budget, and deliver a polished product to you that you'll be proud to put to work.

You use AI in your work. Shouldn't your pricing reflect the increased efficiency you achieve?

Yes, I use AI on parts of my projects just as I use other software tools. You're not paying me for my typing time. You're paying me for the thinking, decisions, and quality control that come from me doing this work well for many years now.

I've spent over ten years developing the editorial judgment and discernment to know what to keep, what to trash, what's off-brand, and what's risky. Yes, AI often does help me work faster - not always, though - but I'm the one who is responsible for the outcome. You wouldn't want it any other way, and that's what you're paying me for...
